Digital Transgender Archive
Members of a military concert party during World War I. Photographic postcard, ca. 1916.
Amateur theatricals in the trenches. Ref No.1.
Part of James Gardiner Collection: photographs of military, naval, and prisoner-of-war camp drag.
A man in drag represents an old woman who is talking with two other men, who are wearing military helmets, outside a half-timbered building. By way of contrast to another photograph in the same collection (Wellcome Library no. 2043360i), there is no intimacy or glamour in this "Official Photograph taken by permission of the commander-in-chief B.E.F. [British Expeditionary Force] and passed by the chief field censor for publication"
