An interview with Kiyomi Fujikawa, a mixed-race queer trans femme and activist based in Seattle. At the time of this interview, she served as Co-Director of Third Wave Fund, an activist philanthropic organization supporting grassroots, queer and trans youth of color- and women of color-led movements, as well as on the boards of the Groundswell Fund, Funders Concerned About AIDS, and API Chaya. Prior to her work with Third Wave Fund, she served as a Senior Program Associate at the Fund for Trans Generations at Borealis Philanthropy. In this oral history interview, Fujikawa discusses her politicization as a young person in movements against California's Proposition 187, globalization, and the War on Terror, the beginnings of her work and activism in the anti-violence movement, her thoughts on and experiences in the anti-violence movement as a trans woman of color envisioning safety outside of the criminal legal system, the world of activist philanthropy, and trans movements at large, and the urgency of multi- and cross-issue, intersectional models for political and community organizing as necessary for the project of building a better future for trans people.
