Jimmie Slater in drag. Photographic postcard, 192-.
Mr. Jimmie Slater. Sincerely yours Jimmie Slater
Part of James Gardiner Collection: photograph album labelled ‘Drag’.
Portrait of Jimmie Slater (James Edwin Slater 1896-1996), a member of the original 'Splinters' troupe, which had formed as a concert party in France during World War I, and which re-formed as an extremely successful music-hall act touring the country (with numerous cast changes) right through to 1930. The present photo postcard, boldly signed recto by the subject, shows Jimmie circa 1924, looking very elegant and completely convincing as a girl, carrying a large feather fan and wearing an intricate dress; posing side-on. Jimmy had a phenomenal career, performing and producing shows in which he appeared in drag for the next forty years. He lived to be a hundred years old (James Gardiner)
